Kinman Woodstock Plus Strat Set - Thomann United States

Home The Forums So many guitars, so little time! New Reply Thread Tools. Kinman Vs Fralin Pickups.

Pickups |

Ok so I've been looking for sometime for some single-coil noiseless pickups well mostly noiseless because I the Fender SCN noiseless i have are really missing something, mainly the low bassy notes, and they have harsh ice pick treb, regardless, I've narrowed down my choices to either the Kinman Blues Set or Woodstock set, and Fralins blues special I'm looking for a really warm sound with good guttural lows and overall clean good clear sound.

Both are very good and could be "best" depending on your taste. I give the nod to the Fralins. Never heard the Kinmans, but my Fralins are SWEET!! So do they fralin's get alot of hum?

Well, I've got a set of Fralin humbuckers that obviously don't hum. As for the Vintage Hots, I've got a little anecdote for you I was at a party once where this three piece Jam band was playing. The guitar player was playing this new-looking black strat with a red pickgaurd. They were pretty good, but the guitar player had incredible tone thru a Deluxe Reverb. At the end of their set, I was so impressed, I asked the guitarist about his strat, he said "It's just an '01 USA Strat.

Oh yeah and Fralin pickups. He said theywere the Vintage Hot's too. Anyway, they were the best Strat pickups I've ever heard. Get a set of Fralins, make a good shielding job on your guitar and then install a Suhr SSC-BP.

I'm a Fralin dealer and a Kinman endorser - so go figure. I'd be a kinman dealer except he does the direct thing. My main session strat has kinmans in it and it always delivers. Fralin's are weeeeee bit brighter and a weeeeeee bit more open with maybe a weeeeee bit more twang and I mean a teeny weeeeee bit. But noise can and will be an issue. They're pure single coils so its part of the deal which leaves me all the more amazed at what kinmans can do. The backplate thing can help a lot but in extreme enviormnents it is not TOTALLY quiet.

I know this didn't help at all but I really love both. Its just that with kinmans I get the sound I want without ever having to worry about buzz - especially on sessions that have a full orchestra or large band live scoring dates. My nightmare is that on one of those sessions One of my guitarists has Fralins in a G and L Legacy Special 2 Vintage Hots and a Guild Starfire Hollow Body don't know which model pickups he is using. He had the pickups installed at Lindy Fralin's shop, which is about 15 minutes from where my studio is located.

On the Guild, they installed coil taps and rewired the instrument and now it sounds like a freakin monster. Both guitars sound absolutely fantastic. I tried a set of Kinmans Traditional Mk II with his wiring harness in my Special Ed Strat. Also, they felt very compressed when digging in with a heavier attack.

They were OK for clean stuff pop, country but they didn't work for me for blues, rock, or anything where I had some gain dialed in on my amps.

The neck pickup is nice and fat for SRV blues stuff. The bridge pickup can be bright and sparkly, but roll the tone knob back and its great for soloing. I had not been playing this particular Strat very much, but I'm really enjoying the guitar a lot now that I put in the Fralins. The Fralins seem much less susceptible to hum than the stock Fender SC's.

If you really need no buzz, then go with the SSC BP from John Suhr. Originally Posted by Beagle1. Originally Posted by lblstudio.

I have both on my guitars. The Fralins I use are the straight Alnico V blues set. Wonderful complex but cutting tone. The Kinmans I have are SCn bridge, AVn62 middle and neck. I love these too.

Actually, I prefer these to any pickups I have ever tried. Some like theirs about 2 mm from the strings giving a more trebly tone.

I like mine about 4 mm or more from the strings, giving a more rounded, but still articulate tone. The Wonder of Lindy Fralin. Used Fralin Blues Special Tele neck pickup.
